The first few miles of the race were on packed-down gravel and dirt, which was pretty easy for people with running shoes, but hard for Maris's Vibrams.

The trail takes a left turn here and ascends up to the top of Briones crest. This is where the runners hit their first really muddy sections!

We're not sure, but we think that this was taken near Aid Station #2, close to Alhambra Creek.

There was some confusion around Aid Station #2. You can hear some confused chatter amongst the runners! This video was shot some fraction of a mile past the turn-around point, so Maris and all the other runners were off the official course and scrambling (through the mud) to get back!

This is on the ascent back to the top of the ridge from the North side. Maris tried to show how deep into the mud his feet were going, but it's hard to see with all the shaking.
